Nick Thompson, R-Fort Myers, introduced a bill to combat the increasing problem of marijuana grow houses in Florida.
House Bill 173, the Marijuana Grow House Eradication Act, won approval from the House Committee
on Homeland Security and Public Safety.
The bill creates new penalties for
those who grow 25 or more plants and for those who own or live in a house for the purpose of growing marijuana.
Now, any bust over 25 plants would be treated as a felony offense with a minimum jail sentence.
It also provides enhanced penalties when a child is present at the grow house.
To
address the burden of storage, law enforcement would be able to destroy grow house equipment after the investigation is complete.
The bill will now be referred to the Safety and Security Council. Representative Nick Thompson
says the bill is gaining support and may pass in March. If so, the new law will go into effect this year.
